DONG Energy was established in 2006 by the merger of six Danish energy companies: DONG, Elsam, Energi E2, Nesa, Københavns Energi and Frederiksberg Forsyning.

Dong stands for Danish Oil & Natural Gas, and is the largest off-shore wind power producer in the world.

The UK arm of Dong was formally known as Shell Gas Direct. Shell Gas Direct became part of Dong Energy in May 2012. Eventually rebranding as Dong Energy Sales, they are now supplying to over 5,000 UK Businesses; the 3rd largest supplier in the UK with a 12% market share.
